These are thirty of my favourite games, I have chosen to use only games from the Mega Drive, SNES, Playstation, and Nintendo 64, why? Well it is simply that these are the machines that I have played the most, and that my memory of the Spectrum and Commodore days is growing increasingly hazy.
1. Sensible Soccer (Mega Drive)
What can I say about this one, except that it is the best game ever. It is extremely playable and a great laugh. The graphics do the job well and the wealth of league and cup options will keep you going for ages. It really is a shame that the recent Playsation update was so terrible.
2. Goldeneye (Nintendo 64)
Until I played this game a little while ago I was unsure about the N64, since then my Playstation has been gathering dust in the corner. The one player game is fantastic, but the best part of this game is the brilliant death-match multiplayer game. If you've never played this game do it!!
3. Micro Machines II (Mega Drive)
The first Micro Machines game was good, but the second one was fantastic. This was the first game I ever played that was a brilliant in four player mode. This is a great game with loads of options in both one player and multi-player. The Playstation version is very good, but I do prefer this version. Why? Don't really know, I just do!
4. Dino Dini's Soccer (Mega Drive)
This little gem was sadly over-looked by most when it was released, which is a pity as beneath the slightly dodgy graphics is an absolutely fantastic footy game that even managed to rival Sensi for sheer playability. If you get a chance to try this game make sure you do.
5. Mario Kart (SNES)
This is a cracking racing game, taking Nintendo's extremely popular plumber and sitting him and some of his chums in little karts. The graphics were great at the time and still look okay today. This is a classic game requiring both quick reactions and skill, especially for the power-sliding. It is worth buying a cheap SNES just for this game. Again it is a shame the N64 update did not live up to expectations
6. Bust-A-Move II (Playstation)
This has to be one of the simplest but most addictive games ever. It is a puzzle game very similar in style to Tetris, and probably on a par with that gem of a game. The two player mode is great fun and the one player game is playable if a bit un-exciting. If you've got friends buy this game, if not then don't.
7. ISS PRO '98 (Playstation)
Most football games for the second generation consoles have left me feeling disappointed, however ISS PRO is extremely playable and very realistic. The only disappointment is that there are only around thirty teams to choose from. If you have got a Playstation and want a footy game get this, not FIFA!
8. EA Hockey (Mega Drive)
I guess the main reason this game is here is that it was the my first game for the Mega Drive and I loved it at the time and even now I can still bash the puck around the ice a bit. It is just a shame about the fighting, which can get very boring after a while.
9. Soulblade (Playstation)
Before I played Soulblade I was not a great fan of beat-em-ups at all. I had always found Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat pretty dull, however Soulblade has great graphics, is nice and quick, and has lots of brilliant characters and different weapons to choose from. In my opinion this game is the best beat-em-up for the Playstation, yes it's better than Tekken.
10. Super Tennis (SNES)
The second generation consoles have really struggled to give us a half decent tennis game, however this was not a problem on the SNES. Super Tennis is another very, very playable game, which is again still very playable today as you don't need polygons and 3D to make something fun. If you did buy a cheap SNES second hand get this game as it is brilliant fun with a few friends.
Are you bored of this? Go back to the start then!
